hello i am new here and have a question about sighting in a rifle. i went to a indoor range and sighted in a 25 yards because of time i was not able to get outside and sight in at 100. i was about 3/4 high at 25 yards with a 30/30 with a 170 grain bullet. now opening day i had a hundred yard shot and had 2 clean misses. was i wrong to set scope 3/4 high at 25 yards? i am going back to range before i head to the field and could use some helpful guidance
+3/4" @ 25 yards would put you in the 4.5" high at 100 yards, witha 200 zerousing 170gr/3030/moving at an average of 2200fps MV. If you were trying to achieve a 100yard zero, should have been - .37"@ 25 yards. This is using a ballistics program and well you found out the hard way to know for sure you must verify it on the range at the distances you intend to shoot. Drop it an inch for 100/0then test at 25 and 100, fine tune from their.
Yea i did learn the hard way. i am just glad they were clean misses and that i didn't wound the animal. thank you for you help. I will fine tune it and get it right before i hit the woods. thanks again
yes i was wrong going into the woods with a 25 yard sight in. my dad had alway taken care of shighting our rifles and not taught me how.and since he has passed i have had alot of the "learn it the hard ways" i thought i was doing a good thing shighting in at 25 yards as that was all that was avalible in my area. i am sure i will never make that mistake again.
