Default 3.3x10x44 scope

Is a 3.3x10x44 scope overkill (to much scope)for a 30/06?

I don't think of any scope as overkill. More important than the 3.3x10x44 part is the quality of the scope and its glass/coatings. I use a Zeiss Diavari 3x12x56 on my .270 and I don't think it is overkill.

That's a excellent choice for a all round scope for your 30-06. Remember to keep it turned all the way down while hunting. That way,if you are presented with a close, fast shot, you'll be able to take it and if you see a deer at longer range.you'll usually have time to turn it up.

All my hunting rifles wear variable scopes in the 3 x 10 area,I like the ability to power up or down depending on the situation. Bonus- range work is easierat higher magIMO
