I have one and the only difference between the two is that the Leupold scopes has a serial number laser etched in the scope tube and if there is a warranty problem - Leupold will not repair it.
Vari X 1's are the main one that were targeted by the Chineese and they sold just as many at Wal Mart as they did on Ebay.
The friction adjustments on mine are soo poorly made that you cannot adjust them to a precision amount to zero in a normal .270 Winchester with a box of shells.

Man you are just wrong on that comment. I have had Leupold products for over 30 years and have never once had the zero ever change. My deer rifle had a compact 2x7 on it for 20 years and I never had to adjust the zero once in that amount of time, and I shoot hundreds of rounds every year.
