Default To get new Nikon or nicer model refurbished?

I need a new scope for my 336C .35Rem. I don't need a high dollar job, I wanna keep around $150 or so. I am a big fan of Nikon products however I have no experience with their cheaper models. I can get the ProStaff 3-9X40 for around $150-160. Or I can get a Buckmasters, same power for around the same price factoryrefurbished. Anyone know how good their warranty is and if it carries on refurbished scopes?

I have 2 ProStaffs, with which I'm very happy.

However, for only $50 more, you can get into a new Monarch: http://www.natchezss.com/category.cfm?category=405&brand=NK&catLeve l=1

It's hard to find that much scope for the money, and it's new, not a refurb. Actually, Natchez has the new scopes for the same price as the refurbs - I have no idea why.

If you have the oppty. to check the ProStaff against the Monarch side-by-side, go ahead & try 'em out, & see if you think the Monarch's worth another $50. I believe they used to get nearly $400 out of 'em at one time.

I'm wondering why anyone would put a 3x9 scope on a Marlin 35 Rem in the first place? It is a bush gun needing no more than a fixed 4x and better a 2.5x tops! Besides putting a huge scope on this firearm will wreck the gun's balance and handling features. But to each their ownI guess................Harold

i cannot bring myself to view the marlin lever action as a brush buster only. although they really shine at this i have no reservations with a 200-250 yard scoped shot with this rifle. Now I do carry my guide gun with peep sights only but this .35is quite accurate at longer ranges, sub moa at 100 yards from a rest w/ no trouble with the older scope(lense busted on it though). My hunting property usually offers 20-50 yard shots but there are a few fields i hunt over where the higher power scope would be abit handier.

I own the same rifle but much older and have hunted with it for over 20 years. The kind of hunting I do is usually in the woods and most of my shots are under 100 yards. I would not even attempt a shot on an animal that was over200 yards with this caliber. Ballistically speaking the 200 gr round nose has a velocity of only 2000 fps. That being a max load. The energy @ 200yds is only 783 ft-lbs. Rule of thumb: On a mature whitetail you should always have a minimum of 1000ft lbs of energy at the point of contact. At 150 yards energy is 960 ft-lbs. Still under 1000 ft-lbs.
I love my 35 RemingtonMarlin it does shoot sub MOA on rest and will continue to hunt with it knowing what thelimitations are.
Now letslook at optics for this fine rifle. There is no doubt that a scope will let you shootlonger thatyour eyes and still make a lethal shot. The more light enters the scope the better. If you hunt in the woods it gets darker there before fields do. Since I do most of my hunting under canopies of swamps edges, inside pine thickets it just would make perfect sense to get a scope that has great optics and a low power setting. The lower the setting the more light can enter hence the longer you can see. My chose would be a 1.5-6 38 to 40mm scope.
If cost is an issue so be it. I can tell you when it comes to optics you do get what you pay for. That being said the following scopes in my opinion have excellent glass and are affordable Nikon Monarks, Leopold, Burris. All carry lifetime warranties including refurbs even if you are not the original owner and don't have a receipt.
Hope this helps and good luck this year.

No offense here, but there is no way in the world I would feel comfortable shooting deer at200-250 yardswith a .35 Remington!

As for a 3-9x40 scope on a .35 Rem, I believe it would be an excellent choice. Often, when having to check deer to make sure they are shooters, it comes in handy to be able to look them over closely with a 3-9 power scope.

I have a .35 Rem that I have used for over 30 years. Great gun and I have a 1.5-5x40 Tasco that I bought 40 years ago that works great on it. Has a center post reticule that puts you on target instantly.

However, Dixie Rebel is right. I will likely put a 3-9x on it soon just so I can check out my target more closely before shooting.

Well I should stress this is under very ideal circumstances, solid rest, none to little wind and no obstacles. But the rifle under correct circumstances can reach out longer than alot give credit.

Personally have a problem with buying something that has already failed, hence "refribed". I have no experience with either model but have to wonder if you require a higher mag scope due to the confidence, ability and situation for the rifle why would you opt for a cheaper scope. If your other rifles wear scopes you like and by the sounds of it this rifle has practical biggame use why not equip it with something you know will make you happy??? Just my way of thinking I guess. Good Luck.

Thats is why they make binos!!!! I consider a scope an aiming device not a spotting tool!![:-]

well the refurb thing left me leary enough to go new. I have great confidence in Nikon optics. and higher scope is more so for longer shooting at the range and possibly if the field will allow. and main reason i don't want to spend huge amounts of money on it is its more my secondary big game. And i've had good luck out of the Bushnell Banners and some other cheaper priced models from a reputable company. But I'm quite happy with it.
