I like things simple........36 mm objective lenses -40mm and 2nd image plane.......
I can't fathom any big game hunting situation where more than a 7 power is required out to 500yrds..
In fact I've never had my scope cranked past 5 power when shooting big game out to 450yrds...
I take brightness and field of view over mag any day.....
In fact my scope is at its lowest setting until I need to adjust it...
Personall preference 1.5X6 or 2x7...
I do use a 3x9 x 40 on my 30-06 but its never been past 5 power when shooting at big game hunting....
And my .338 carries a 1.5 x 6....
The minute you crank the scope up, the image is dimmer and you lose field of view...

My 3x9x40 is rarely cranked up over 3. Occaisionly I'll turn it up to 4,5,or 6 but not because I really need to. I'll probably buy 4x scopes in the future. It's all I need.
Far more important than the power of the scope is the quality of the scope/glass and its coatings.
For me...
Its holding zero from shot to shot to shot..... Having a crisp clear image of what we are hitting or missing is somewhat of a limiting apeal to me..
It"IS" what I expect from my what I expect of bino's and spotting scope....
But a scope that "falls apart" in the middle of me shooting does not bag animals......
