It sort of depends on what you are going to use the scope for, what your expectations are and what your budget is. Honestly you couldn't give me a Simmons. Good luck.

Couldn't tell you either..
There a verity of test you can do, to see how well it works against with clarity, fogging and moisture...
But my main concern would be how it tracks out to your max shooting distance...
Best bet is to mount it on a gun , choose a cartridge you know shoots and holds its groups well and see how the scope tracks when you shoot.......
If its all over holes are all over the place take it back......

My budget was..... as cheap as I could get away with. I don't need top of the line but I would like it to work properly. I am putting it on a .223and hunt grounghogs and coyote. I plan to shoot past 300 yds.

Same here.I have witnessed several scope failures and all were tasco, simmons or bsa.I wouldn't trust any of these on a big game hunt.

I bought one on clearance at WallyWorld in the middle of last season. I stuck it on a 30-30. While sighting it in it was doing great then all of a sudden the shots started to string badly. The recticle was turning inside the scope body. I sent it back to Simmons a few weeks ago. I'll put the new one on eBay. I paid $26.99 for it. I've had good luck with the 44Mag and Aetec scopes.

I just replaced the scope that came on the Howa package. Money was an object with me as well. I bought a Pentax Gameseeker 3x9x50 for $99.00 shipped. I just bought the same scope but in 3x9x40 for my partner at work for $79.00 shipped.

Everyone will tell you not to skimp on optics, they are right. Like you money was an object with me. I opted to go with a low end model from a better make.

Speaking candidly, you couldn't give me a Simmons or any other product from Meade.

My dad bought one, a whitetail classsic I think, and put it on the "kids" gun, a lovely little Remington model seven in 7mm-08. That scope had suchpitiful eye relief that in order to see the sight picture it had to be mounted much too far rearward The optics I thought wereterrible at best - dim and lacking in contrast and sharpness. I told him to throw it away and I replaced it myself with a Nikon Buckmaster I found on eBay for $150.00. The Buckmaster isn't a great scope - I realize that, but for this application where the kids aren't likely to attempt a shot over 200 yards it works great. I put another Buckmaster on my Omega muzzleloader and have been very satisfied after two seasons. There is a lot of value at this price point with the Buckmaster series from Nikon.

Somewhere near the $200.00 price point you start getting much better optics, reliability, and value in a standard 3X9X40 rifle scope (Burrus Fullfield II, Nikon Buckmaster, Bushnell Elite 3200). There are a few scopes at lower price points that I think are OK for certain application (Nikon Pro Staff, Bushnell Legend and Trophy series), but by and large the scopes that cost less than that are prone to failure at the worst possible time. They either will fog when the weather changes drastically or they won't hold zero. They don't have fully multi-coated optics either, which decreases light transmission.
