Was shooting a 308 yesterday with a springfield government scope set up for 168 gr bullets,I had traded a fellow for the scope at a gun show.I had set the cross hair up at 100 yds and it has held for weeks of shooting now.Had tried to get the marks to work out at 300 to no avail. So yesterday I decided to try just turning the up and down turret.Dailed to what should have been on at 300 shot one and hit just touching a 3in dot, shot another one and the bullet struck about an inch lower, another about an inch lower than the last, down to about 5 or six inches.By this time I was just sitting there at the bench trying to figure out what was going on and happened to look at the turret knob and it was back down to where I set it at 100 yds.I knew I hadn't touched the knob and told my shooting buddy what was happening and he didn't believe me so I had him to shoot a couple shots,I turned the knob back to where I had it and he shot the turret knob came down one click,he shot again and it came down another click.
I have been shooting many, many years and this is the first time I had actually seen the turret knob actually turn as you fireda shot.
I called springfield when I got home and the lady I talked to was very nice and told me to send it to them and they would take care of it,I didn't know this but she said they hadn't made a scope in four years.
Hope to get it back soon I really like the scope.
I had the same problem with my 30-06 except mine kept going to the right about 1.25 inches. It turned out the mounts i had were bad. One of the screws was stripped.

Just being young me
I bought a low cost scope and had a problem with it when sighting it in. I think its a redhead scope but im not shure.3-9x40 matte black and 40 dollars. When sighting it in if I did not screw the caps down on the scope before fireing it would walk the shot all around.
I think ill get a nikon or maybe leapold (if I can find one on sale) the gun is mossberg 100 atr, which has been a good gun for all 40 rounds ive shot out of it cept this little scope issue thing. hope you get your issue worked out before next season.
It may be that the scope just finally had enough and took a dump on you. I read about a trick somewhere fairly recently that sounded interesting. A guy was experiencing a moving POI (I can't remember if it was vertical or horizontal?) and he took the turret in hand, gave it a quick turn one way a good number of turns (a zip turn)and then equally turned it back the opposite direction again about the same distance (zip turn) and took a shot and it was back very close to where he had originally sighted it in. I do not know if I would try something like this on one of my scopes, but the guy insisted that it worked.
Do you guys realize that a Springfield Armory scope is worth quite a bit of money and comparing it to a POS $30 scope is an insult. I seriously doubt that improperly aligned bases and rings will cause that. More likely the positive click action and mechanism got weak.

Just look at the parallels of the Nazi regime and the Obama Administration amazingly similar arent' they.
Update on the scope, got it back and tested it yesterday.Works great now, said they tightened the turret and was a note in with the scope the one that worked on it said he had worked on scopes for seven years and he had never seen the turrets turn when fired.I have been shooting rifles with scopes for many many years and it was the first one I had seen this happen also.
Anyhow they gave great service, got it back in 2 weeks, especially since they haven't made this scope in 4 years.Wonder why they don't make them any more? this is one heck of a scope.
My cousin put a Springfield Armory scope on his H&K SL8-1 (.223) and had the same kind of problem with loose knobs and a wandering zero. Ended up selling it and buying another brand.
Glad to hear you get it back in working order, herman. Good luck!
