BDC Reticle

I'm looking at buying a new scope to go along with mynew .30-06, and have came across BDC reticles. I don't understand how they work fully. I understand that you sight them in at 100 yrds and it is supposed to have circles to out to say 500yrds. This is where I am confused on their functioning. Are they just generalizing the amount bullets of different calibers, weights, and charges will drop? I am pretty sure I'm going to get a Nikon Buckmaster scope. They offer a BDC and nikoplex reticle and am uncertain about the BDC. Any info is appreciated.

RE: BDC Reticle

I have a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 with a BDC reticle on my Savage .270 I will say that I have only shot out to 200 yards, but the circle under the crosshair is supposed to be 200 yards and it is about .5 inch low. I didn't have enough time to go back to 300 so that will have to wait til next time, but I do think they work.

Yes, they are just generalizing an average trajectory. Every rifle and every bullet will be different but you should be able to make repeatable shots if you practice with your rifle and ammo from known distances. Of course you also need to know your distance when taking a shot in the field.
