Default RE: YMR (15-17) draw weight

I would suggest that you are a big boy,but I would bet that you may end up a couple inches taller.
The constant and repetitive strain of archery can and does cause problems to the shoulder/spine during growth.
I have shot 3-D for more years than I care to mention, and am so old that I can remember the years we shot over 100# to get speed. I wish now that we had the bows of today back then and would not have the shoulder problems that I do now.
Draw weight now is more of a testosterone thing and has very little advantage for performance and has many disadvantages for accuracy.
Get set up with the correct draw and arrow combination. Work on form and accuracy. Forget the weight thing. I see the best shooters in the world at every shoot and awards presentation.
I promise you VERY few today shoot more that 60-64 pounds.

Working on the bench to improve your best is more dangerous to the body during growth spurts than archery.
Forget the macho crap. If you are an archer, concentrate on putting the arrow in the tiniest little spot you can imagine.
If you want to contact me directon my e-mail I can and will put you in touch with a few of the absolute very best shooters there are. I will bet they will all give you the same advice.
Keep the weight down and shoot it accurately.

Hey...its just whatever your comfortable with. I will be 16 in feb. Im 5'10". 140lbs. I bench 165, which i dont think has anything to do with drawing a bow back. When I was 14 i was capable of pulling back an 85# bow. I shoot 70 pounds for hunting and usually 65 for target and 3d. Most situations 70# isnt neccesary, but if your comfortable with it then keep shooting it.

Ken,

Good advice. I think that everyone is essentially saying this already. I hope that archery_guy04 will pay attention to the thoughts and experiences of those who have been there and done that.

high poundedge is for hunting, lower it down to about 58 or 60 and adjust your sights. if you can compete in the 70 pound class youll do much better in the lower class ne ways.

I personally do not see the need for pulling 70#. Sure you'll get more speed but if you can estimate yardages hittin' the spot shouldn't be that much more difficult and your arms will thank you for it. if you'd drop your bow down to 65# you should be much more stable and your accuracy ought to improve. Right now i'm pullin 64lbs with my MQ-1 with 28 inch 3-60's ACC's ... 29 inch draw (1 inch overdraw) while everyon else is givin' out there weights and how muacho we are i'll join in a guess. i'm 17. weigh 178 and bench 235. In my experience.... i'm not sure bench press helps strengthen muscles needed to draw a bow. It seems like those are a completly differnet set of muscles.
