Default New on Here

Just wanted to say Hi. I'm new here so you may have to cut me some slack for a while.

I am a semi-retired outdoor writer and wildlife manager. Been fooling with deer for over five decades and still spend most of my time hunting and fishing and lieing about it. had my share of the trophy itis and now just hunt for the enjoyment of it. I still write for a few newspapers and a couple magazines but mostly just kickback and play with the grandkids.

As for my bona fides, I have hunted extensively across the the U.S. and Canada for most of the big game except sheep and goats. I don't like where they live. I was primarily a bowhunter until an injury and a serious illness forced me to use a crossbow. If that bothers anybody, I'm sure you can get over it.

Glad to be here.

Scribe.

Thanks all. Hope your season is going well. Due to some serious health issues, I hunted a grand total of 45-minutes last year, shot once, killed one. This year I have hunted about 30 hours and killed eight so it has been a blessing season for me.

I no longer "trophy" hunt, give no thought to antlers, just hunt for meat and for enjoyment so I seldom practice what I preach. I may pass up a young buck three times and shoot him the fourth time he comes by.

Just wanted to give y'all an idea of my current hunting philosophy.

8 deer in a year....must be nice to live in an area with that kind of hunting and bag limits. I had to hunt 3 states to get 2 buck so you are way ahead of me. All my seasons are closed now and the hunting stuff is all oiled and locked away. Now time for the real season....hard water fishing

I can kill three does a day and three bucks for the entire season from late Sept. until Jan. 1, This year, I have killed six does and two bucks. When I am healthy and feel like hunting, I usually kill about 8/2 just to keep the numbers down.

Now that I seldom go out of state chasing horns anymore, I have more time to devote to thinning the numbers around here. The same is true of turkeys although we don't have as liberal bag limits as we need for this county. This is a common sight in my backyard.

Nice picture and a whole bunch of toms there. We have some pretty good turkey hunting up here in Vt too. If the deer hunting was like it used to be it would be golden but numbers are way down. Many people I know go out of state for a quality deer hunt. What State are you in ...Virginia possibly

Nice picture of the turkeys - my backyard looks just like that a couple of times a day. We watch them fly up to roost in some pines on the golf course across the road.

Champlain- Some years ago I did some seminars at an outdoor show in St. Albans. man that was some beautiful country but it was all covered with snow. The show was in a hockey complex and the ice was still on the floor with just some panels over it. I about froze to death.
