Default Where to buy land in NY? Any ideas?

I'm in the process of selling my land in Sullivan county, near Monticello. Its getting to crowded, and with the talks of casinos and such, alot of rich, snooty, anti-hunting people will probably be moving into the areas, along with houses, condos etc....

So I'm looking to go somewhere where the hunting is good, people are not around to much, and the possibility of development is near ZERO!!

I'm considering northern Delaware county, Schoharie or Chenango county. Any ideas? Anybody hunt Chenango or Schoharie county? How is it? Hows the huntin?

Thanks

CatskillHuntr - I am fortunate to have bought property in Delaware County a number of years ago. The area is still mostly farms and very rural. The hunting is very good for my favorites (deer, turkey, grouse and woodchucks). The possibility of casinos will probably add to my travel time, but the trip will still be very much worth it. Email me if you want more detail.

Catskillhunter --

I know what you mean. I have a friend who grew up in Maplecrest in the Catskills and city-slickers come buy up the edges of the farms and then scream bloody murder if anybody hunts behind them (doesn't matter if it isn't on their property. I live in Rochester NY and I'm always frustrated by the folks who complain about the snow. It would be like living in Miami and complaining about palm trees. So why these people think that they can move into the wilderness and expect suburbia just blows me away. Hunting is just a fact. If it's not us it will be the coyotes (and we take the game far more humanely). Same problem up in Montana. Movie stars come in an buy 1000s of acres, drive up the prices and drive out the locals who are just trying to live. But then I digress. I'd look for land in rural/non-touristy areas. Country folk seem to appreciate hunting in a way that the tourists don't. By the way, if there is a tourist season, how come we can't shoot them?

STAY AWAY FROM WINDHAM AND HUNTER.... those are the biggest winter tourist places in greene county... schoharie is very good.. not too many people and the people who are there are more than happy to greet another hunter
I LIKE THE IDEA OF TOURIST SEASON.... WHERE CAN I BUY A LICENCE?

I moved North from the Ellenville area twenty years ago.
Too many people, too much crime, taxes too high, too many anti's,
too many too many's! Now I live in God's country, or as close as you can get to God's country and still be in NY.

My family has about 400 acres about 4 miles west of 390, and I love the hunting there. Land is available, I would try to contact any of the realtors. I wish i could be more help, but I moved to va last year. Good luck!

Hey, Phade, anyway I could be adopted into your family? :-) We have been interested in buying land in the Southern Tier -- something we could camp on in the summer and hunt on on the fall. Don't imagine it will ever happen on my salary and the wife is home with the kids. I've wondered about the tax auctions. I have lots of access here in the Rochester area to a few acres here and a few there and it's great to have access so close, but it also means worry about houses, scads of hunters, and the constant drone of planes, trains, and automobiles, and always asking for permission or waiting for an invitation.

We live in Greene county but have property in Chenango. The hunting out that way is pretty good. I haven't hunted there in the past couple of years. Unless things have changed it is a shotgun only county. If I was going to buy a place that I wanted to know would not be overdeveloped (in my lifetime at least) and was affordable I would look towrd the lower Adirondaks. Then you would be closer to the Northern zone and can start the seaon earlier and hunt longer. Good Luck.
