This was on I380 about 2-3 miles where it splits from I80 heading north.(poconos,pa) I seen a trooper messing with something on the side of the highway thinking he must of been cleaning something off the road. As I got closer it really surpised me to see it's a black bear dead right off on the side of the road.(head was smashed) Now I've never seen a black bear in the wild no less dead on the side of the road. With the trooper standing by it sure didn't look little maybe 5 feet long laying on it's side and pretty hefty.I was just wondering if this normal thing to happen. And if that bear was big for the area.
It's not very common but does certainly happen in our state. A 5 ft. long bear as you describe it probably goes in 175-225 range possible slightly heavier and really isn't that big of a bear for PA. The state record is in the above 800lbs and a bear like that pretty much is a 7 ftr. Sad thing though non the less.

I've only seen Black bears 3 times that I can remember, twice in PA and once in NJ. Each time the bear was about 350-400 lbs, maybe a little more, it was early in the season too.

Thanks for the respons.I'll agree it was a bummer to see it hit.It must be a real thrill when your out hunting one of them and get one, but a heck of a time recovering it.
Rob, actually it happens quite a lot around here in the Pocono's area. Although not as often as deer, every day new roadkill on different roads I travel. I see or know of at least 7 or 8 every year around here.
The saddest one was one last year where a bruin had wondered into Stroudsburg Area and the people along with help from police ended up chasing it on to Rt 80 by Dreher Ave exit ,where it was promptly hit by a vehicle. It was a 500+ boar, such a waste ,it was just passing thru ,if they had left it alone it would have just kept going on it's own.
About two years ago, one was killed on the Baltimore/Washington Parkway (fact, not speculation). It is theorized it came from Pennsylvania and followed the river down.
Ruddyduck, thanks for the information. Your right, that bear probably would be around today, truly sad. I have heard that your area certainly is having it's bear incidents but didn't realize that road kills were on the up. Hopefully some of the bears in that area will be thinned out. Thanks again.
