Does anyone know where there is a good place to hunt bear in the southerntier of NY, Stuben, Chemung, Schuyler counties, I have taken Bear in the adirondacks but I am getting tired of the long drive, would love to hunt bear closer to home. Can anyone help?

I'd try one county west of Steuben... Allegany. I've hunted Steuben all my life and have seen a grand total of 1 bear. FYI, it was in the Erwin Wildlife Mgt. area.

I'm not sure about hunting the state parks. I think Letchworth S.P. has bowhunting only areas. Perhaps somebody living up there can be of more assistance. Sorry.

Cattaraugus, Allegheny, Stueben are all good counties to check out - make sure your in the region where there is an open season - see map above from Charlie P.
You can't hunt Allegheny St. park - there is other state land , not all of it is listed on the DEC Websites so I'd make some calls to some biologists and DEC officers in the area. Maybe the NY Forest Rangers - some good chunks of state forest land down there open too hunting.
