Fallow Deer in Maryland
I know most of our passion is for Whitetails, but I see in the Hunting Guide that they say Maryland has " a few isolated areas" with Fallow Deer. Does anyone want to share with me what part of the state they are talking about. Is it along the PA border or down " the shore" ? I think their racks are cool and would love to find an area to hunt this type of Deer. Thanks,
B

I' m not from Maryland, but I think they mean the counties down along the eastern shore.
How did they get there anyway? Did the state release them, or did they escape from a perserve? Is there a season for them, or is it open for them all year long?

RE: Fallow Deer in Maryland
At one time there was some free ranging fallow deer in MD, but no longer. Unless someone is releasing some more. The digest was never changed, not sure why, but there hasn' t been one killed in years. I knew one old farmer who had shot one about 35 years ago, if not longer. Last year' s MD deer hunting guide had a picture of a guy with an axis deer, claiming it was a fallow, but it was poor editing, look for yourself. just sikas and whitetails in MD. Every so often someone shoots a piebald doe with white spots and thinks they got one.

Yup, the sika were released by a boy scout troop at the turn of the century, when it was popular to " stock" non native animals across the country, similar to pheasants, chukar, etc. Don' t know about the fallow deer, though, but I suspect something similar.
