Default Question

Do you think it is to early to use estrus scents in New York?

I,d say yes , its a little early ..
IMO theres not a wriiten text buck day to use or not use .
I,m in Nothern NY ,
Todays the first time I seen a few smaller bucks sparring , They were mostly playing ...
The temps are starting to fall pretty fast , down to 27 degrees this morning ...
I,d say around Holloween this will start to pick up because the weathers getting colder now .
I,d use it anytime around the 31st....

With the rutting full moon beginning on Friday I believe your not going to hurt your chances any buy using it. I had put some out this past Sunday in a Tinks Bomb and had three yearlings come in under my stand. Though my stand is a few tree's away from a large white oak, these deer where not there to feed infact they merely stood under my stand 10 yards away looking and listening for a good 20 mins. One groomed herself a bit and sniffed her way closer to where I also have a mock scrape that keeps fresh with a scent drip. Everytime I head to my stand I spray the bottom of my hunting boots with this mock scrap spray which has "no" urine scent of any kind in it but it does have all the other scents found in a scrap. One of the doe's crossed my trail and her head immeditely went to the ground and she followed it straight to my stand. I'm 25 ft in the tree and still couldn't move for fear one would bust me, I had stood still for so long I needed to re-adjust my position "legs started going numb" and one caught my movement and look right at me. I froze and avoided looking her in the eye's and after a couple minutes she relaxed and continued grooming. My thought was these deer were orphin's and thought my scents were their mother perhaps. I had seen these deer a couple of times before but never seen them with their mother. Two of them may have weighed 80 pounds and one was lucky to weigh that much. Getting any deer to come near your stand is always a good thing as the trail scent they leave behind could attract others to follow. During pre-rutt, bucks will sometimes like to take inventory of the available doe's in the area so testing "the waters" so to speak, can have it's benifits you just never know unless you try. Two years ago I took a nice 6 just before the rutt in this manner just 30 mins after some doe's had been under my stand.

What I do is spray the estrus on the wick the day before and let it dry out for a couple of hours and recap it. The next day I won't freshin it up because I don't want it to be too strong. I think if it is to strong right now that would be too un-natural. It has worked for me anyways.

I'm waiting till the Halloween weekend also. Since we only hunt weekends, and I'm on the ground, they've been moving around, browsing and checking scrapes, which is good enough for me. I swear by the drag line, and since I'm not sure how any older bucks might react, I'll wait till that beginning of the rut to start.
The mock scrape spray sounds interesting, but I'd put it on a drag line so that I could keep it away from my tent. Good luck.
