Guys, I haven't hunted NJ since the early 80's before I went into the Navy, can anyone provide clarification on what the current license requirements are. I picked up the journal but that is about as confusing as trying to read a legal disclaimer. Do you buy a hunting license, then separate deer permit for shotgun/muzzleloader and for archery?
When I got out of the Navy, my friends had for the most part moved to PA and that is where I've been hunting for the last 15 years.
Also any suggestions on public land in North Jersery?

What do you need to know specifically?
You have:
Early bow, reg bow, extended bow and winter bow. You need a permit for every zone you hunt in for extended bow season + your regular license fee. You also need to buy a buck tag during the extended seasons (just one buck tag covers all your zones).
Muzzle loader:
Rifle permit + regular firearm license + zone permit + buck tag and one buck tag covers all your zones. you are allowed unlimited does and you need a doe permit for each zone.
Shotgun 7-day:
Regular firearm license and you are allowed 2 bucks + unlimited does if you buy the permit and you need a doe permit for each zone.
Here is the thing that reallllllllllyyyyyyyyy makes me angrier than a bull running in the streets, if you look at how they do the seasons, dates and the sexes of the deer you can shoot when where and how it is a SCAM!!!!!!! One day it is this and the other is that. There is no way in hell you can tell me all these overlapping dates and seasons a made to stand behind common sense heard management and biological data. It is a money maker and I do not even know why we have state biologists working for the F&W dept. I think the NJ gaming commission will be a better fit!!!! Less corruption with the gaming commission. LOL I have found the game of chess is easer to play than the NJF&W game and season dates. What they have done is in fact forced hunters into telling fibs about their reporting of deer.
Holy cow, talk about a convoluted rip off, it sounds as though I'd still be better off going into NY as a nonresident. The game jounal is so confusing and I thank you for your input, I am however no less confused than I was before. How much do you usually end up shelling out for your license and permits.

For Bow I spent $31.50 for the license, then after Oct. 31 comes permit bow season w/buck tag for $28 per zone(I hunt 2) and the Buck tag good 1 time no matter how many permits you buy.
Shotgun license is $27.50 for 6 day shotgun season, the an antlerless permit good till Feb. for another$28.00 per zone(I get 2) If you want a buck tag you have to purchase this at the same time you get your first antlerless permit , otherwise the computer will reject you at a later date. This costs $28. only 1 allowed and if you harvest 2 bucks during the six day season then the permit is no good and you wasted $28. But if you want to hunt antlerless deer during the 6 day you need to but the buck tag at the time you buy your antlerless zone permits. The buck tag as well as the antlerless permits are good till the season ends in Feb. All you will need to hunt Jan and Feb would be a new current license. Hope this clears something up and not confuses it any more than it is. In the Republic of New Jersey it's all about $ and how much they can get you for.
Since your from Garfield stop in at Meltzer's or Targeteers and they'll be glad to explain things. Just don't wait till the last minute when everyone goes.

THE FOUR SEASONS- ALMOST SUMMER, SUMMER, STILL SUMMER & DEER SEASON
You have to be put into the system (new computer thing) so goto Meltzers with anyone of your old hunitng license or better one firearm, one archery, and if you had, and still have a muzzleloader permit bring that as well. They will enter your info into the computer and issue you your license. It seems to be many years so as we all know how goverment loses paperwork, don't be surprised that tell you to take the test(s) all-over, good thing is, you can take them all in one given day...best of luck
I said it years ago on another web site and was laughed at, and told I knew nothing.
What I said then and continue to say is, that the state of NJ doesn't care about the hunters or the wildlife they only care for the mighty dollar bill, period!!!!!
The game council has been and continues to be run by puppets of the system that have no idea what they are doing, period!!!
The long deer seasons is just stupid, maybe there was a time we needed to control the population, but the hunters set forth and did the job, the number of deer in the field has dropped big time. What needs to be done is cut back on the long seasons, no firearm hunting of any sort after the 12/31, from Jan.1st-31st winter bow only. Stop the unlimited antlerless killing, have 2 antlerless kills per season(2 for bow, Ext.bow, muzzleloader, shotgun), 3 or 4 points to one side statewide, also STOP THE BAITING, and for those that say the deer population is still high, well for the most part your wrong, the deer population is high is areas where there is no hunting allowed or is very limited.
I took one small buck this year with the muzzleloader here in NJ, and I was somewhat pressured into killing it, I heard a shot and a few minuted later I see a deer slowly walking towards me, it was shot in the bridge of the nose, I allowed it to walk within 10 yards of me then I killed it (from the time I first spotted it till I killed it 40 mins went by) I never saw the hunter so assumed he thought he missed, this deer would of suffered.
I help a friend with his small semi-guided hunts in Illinois we have over 2000 acres, and he working on getting more for this season. The tags are expensive, out hunts are much cheaper then many others in our area (GOLDEN TRIANGLE) but the chances of killing a great buck is fantastic, Illinois is my trophy hunt, NJ is a meat hunt.
I see your from Garfield, I was born and rasied in Lodi for 38 years, and moved to Warren County in August of 2009
Lived here most of my life, except for the 10 years in the Navy and when I was married living in Paramus. Spent some time in Lodi when I first got out of the Navy. I know people recommend Meltzers and Targeteers, I have issues with both. Meltzers is just a plain ripoff, after Mr Meltzer (Izzy that it is) passed on the sons took over and jacked up the prices and don't want to know about anything. Targeteers customer service just plain sucks, I will not even walk in the door over there any more.

I agree when Izzy died the store feel apart, if your looking for a good deal on firearms check out one of two places: Mike's Gun Shop in Fairview, or Jim Flynn's Truck Repair Shop in Glen Garnder, both have excellent prices, really nothing in stock, they order what you want and have it within a few days, I have dealt with both.
Targeteers is the only archery pro shop I will deal with, period!!!! Seems like everyone myself included wants to deal with the owner, and that is understandable, but then one must wait, he takes his time with each person, the best thing to do is go during the off season like now during a weekday.
Get your license situation taken care of soon, there is a great chance we have another bear season this year
I've dealt with Mike a couple of times, good guy and doesn't look to gouge you on transfer fees and such the way most others do. Being a one man operation you kinda have to catch him when he's in, sometimes that takes a couple of days. I have been in to Targeteers several times and waited and waited and waited. Had one guy start to help me, then left to take care of the register, asked another guy to help me and he looked right at me and went to another person. The guy who started helping me came back from the register looked right at me and went to another customer. They won't get my business after that.
