Are you referring to Lake Taghkanic state park or the Taconic state park areas of Columbia county?

No, I am not from that area but I hunted a property bordering that state park for a number of years. I no longer have rights to hunt there, but the deer numbers in the area have declined quite a bit in recent years. In fact, it was easy to get 2 doe permits there for many years but now one needs preference points to get even one. I guess bowhunting odds would still be good in that park, even with less deer overall. The ticks seem to be pretty bad around that area. I know whenever it was a warmer day, even later during the general gun season, I would find several ticks on my pants once I got out of the woods. One really needs to be careful there compared to the Catskill region where I don't think I have ever found a tick on myself.

COOL THANKS FOR THE HELP, I'VE BEEN HUNTING THE AREA FOR ABOUT 4 YEARS. LAST YEAR I SAW 5 DOES AND 4 BUCKS. ONE OF THE BUCKS WAS A 6 OR AN 8 HE WAS GONE SO FAST I DIDN'T GET A GOOD LOOK. OVER ALL IT WAS A GOOD WEEK. I LIVE IN NORTH CAROLINA AND THE WOODS ARE SO THICK HERE THAT I'M SAVING MY BOW SEASON FOR JERSEY AND NEW YORK. 2 WEEKS OF BOW HUNTING EVERY DAY, I CAN'T WAIT.

Are you originally from the NY, NJ areas? It's interesting that someone would come to a place like Columbia county NY to hunt deer when North Carolina has no shortage of them and probably plenty more than in NY along with a much more liberal bag limit. Some of us here in NY would probably want to trade places with you.

I'M ORIGINALLY FROM NJ, ALL MY FAMILY IS IN JERSEY AND ALL OVER NY. MY DADS SIDE OF THE FAMILY (ALL THE MEN) HAVE BEEN HUNTING IN THE TAGHKANIC AREA FOR OVER 30 YEARS.I'VE ONLY HUNTED IT FOR 5. I LOVE IT UP THERE!!! AS FOR NORTH CAROLINA THE BUGS ARE REALLY BAD, THE DEER ARE HALF THE SIZE AND THE DARN HUNTING CLUBS AND THE DOG HUNTERS HAVE ALL THE LAND SPOKEN FOR. I'VE TRIED SO MANY TIMES IN THE LAST 4 YEARS TO GET PERMISSION ON DIFFERENT PROPERTIES. MOST OF THE TIME IT'S THE SAME STORY. I'M SO FRUSTRATED THAT I'M SAVING IT ALL FOR UP NORTH!!!!! WOO HOO I'M SO PUMPED JUST TALKING ABOUT IT
