yes it is legal. I have one and use it for coyote hunting. it's technically illegal to buy 30 rd clips now but some stores still sell them. and if you hunt w/it you need to get a 5 rd clip.

If you want high cap mags you have to buy pre ban and they are $$$$. Your best bet is buying them at a gun show.

no.... it's fine to purchase preban magazines. you can get them reasonably priced at cabelas, gander mountain, through the web, etc..
the law made it illegal to import or manufacture new ones.
Didn't the Congress allow the ban to sunset a few years ago?

yeah AR's are pretty generic, all of them with the exception of OLY are part guns, the makers buy parts and assemble, The ban did sunset, but not sure what ny laws are. They are the best thing for varmint/predator hunting, I now have 4, can hunt anything from gophers to grizzley with them.
