Default NY No Deer?

The hardest part with our deer seasons here is the western part of New York is that traditionally you have lots of hunters to move the deer. Now you have fewer hunters and the deer are moving on more of a natural pattern. most pressure is on opening day, weekends, and holidays (Thanksgiving). This leaves us to find were the deer are going what they want to eat and what time they want to move, all by ourselves like we would during archery. The question is, "Is this the reason we seem to be seeing less deer this time of year or are there other explainations" Please give me your input..

good luck!

Having the same problem in the adirondecks. Seems like there are less -n- less deer every year. We had a problem with apples up here this year (there were not any or at least very few) I think this has had alittle bit of an impact. You would think that with the mild winters that we've had in the past couple of years the deer population would be growing.

I’ve been hunting in chataqua and catteraugus counties in Western NY I’m seeing deer but they are not moving enough. I almost got to step on them to get them to move and then they bolt full bore not giving me a shot. Ive saw about 13 deer in one weekend and no shots.
Not enough hunters moving them around.
Monday afternoon coming home I saw at least 6 deer hanging in barns and trees.

We have had pretty good luck this year in chatuaqua county. We have taken 10 deer including 4 buck so far on my 49 acres. After the first day we do some half--- drives to get the deer moving. If the neighbors are out we sit and let them bring the deer to us. It has worked for 3 years now.

I got a spike buck down in Sullivan county on opening day. There are plenty of deer around, but I do not think we have the hunters out there we used to.

Go a big 8 point in Ostego County...didn't need hunters to push it to me....
Practice deer management and don't shoot spikes..let them grow!

We hunt in Cattaraugus Co. here in NY as well, and opening day I was in my portable stand at 6:20am and seen only one doe at 11am? Not that many shots heard either? It was sure crappy out, snowing and blowing, and with not that many guys wandering around, I guess the deer just stayed put!!! One of the worst openers I have seen in while!! Tuesday didn't fair well either!!! <img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle>

We're in southeast Albany County, hunt areas along the Hudson River and northern Catskill / Heldeburg mtns.

Opening day brought three bucks, two nice tens and a plump six for our group. I took a 160# 9 pointer the following Sunday morning. Some doe were spotted from the stands during the first few days but at approx. 250 yards too far for a 12 GA from my stand.

Noticing the same thing, either there aren't as many deer in the herds as reported or they aren't moving around as much as usual. Our drives haven't produced noticable movement.

We had snow on the ground opening day which showed some good sign, it melted and now that we have snow on the ground again it shows less movement through the usual areas. Good number of hunters in the popular spots, but not as many as last year when we had 40+ degree weather for the first half of regular gun season. The thermometer on my jacket said 17 degrees when I climbed up into my stand at 6:30 this morning. Got the next four days off to fill the rest of those doe tags.... good luck to all!
