Default Rifle and Shotgun Combos in NY?

I have a 7 x 65R rifle over a 12 guage shotgun. Used it in Germany. There you could use bullets and shotguns or slugs at the same time, while in stand or on a drive hunt. However, I am wondering, can you carry them in NY to hunt, and if so, can you have ammo for both barrels? I know in I think it is Ohio, my home state, you can carry the gun, but either have bullets or shells only, not both.

In areas where rifles are legal you can carry ammo for both the rifle and shotgun barrel, as long as the shotgun ammo is slug or single projectile..No buckshot allowed in NY..In areas where shotguns/slugs are allowed but rifles are NOT, such as Steuben County, you may carry the firearm during big game season as long as you have no ammo for the RIFLE barrel in your possession..

The only reason I was aware of it is because that question arose a few years back concerning combo guns such as the Savage rifle/shotgun over/unders.. I was told by a conservation officer that they were legal in shotgun only areas as long as you carry no rifle ammo with you..They would certainly be legal in rifle areas ( such as St Lawrence Co. where I assume you'll be stationed) because both rifles and shotguns/slugs are legal there..

BTW, sounds like a nice rig you have there...I assume the 7 x 65R is basically equivalent to the 7 x 64, which is very similar ballistically to the .280 Rem, my pet chambering...

7 X 65R is companion to the 7 x 64, another Benneke cartridge. I like it and not knowing alot about the .280 ballistics I would say moret then likely! I picked it up in Europe and after several years got it shooting good with reloads and now just need to get a close point of impact for the slug in regards to the bullet. More then likely it is going to the woods this fall!

I think it all depends on who you talk to. I have found that most cops and ECO's don't know the laws. I asked a ECO about the late trapping season once, he stated he didn't know. Told me to call the Syracuse office. They told me to read the book which stated the date would be released or to call. I then called Watertown who gave me a date of the last year. Finally I called the cortland office who told me what I wanted to hear.

Can they give you a ticket if they think you are wrong. Sure. Will it stick. NO, If you are sure you are right and can prove it. New York is a funny state about eveything.

Hold the phones! There needs to be a bit of clarity on this one. The Savage over/under story is a bit misleading. If the rifle portion was .22 caliber, then it is legal to possess in the field during deer season. If it was larger, then it IS ILLEGAL to possess in non-rifle deer counties. Carrying ammo is irrelevant here, this is strictly dealing with possession of the firearm in the field.

NYS is very clear in this. Hunters are not allowed to posses a rifle larger than a .22 in the field during hunting hours of deer season in areas where rifles are not acceptable forms of harvesting (ie. shotgun/bow only areas). I believe they are allowed during darkness for varmint/coon hunting during this period.

Edit*

A quick copy/paste of online NYS DEC Big Game Regs:

During the open season for deer, it is illegal to:
[ul][*]possess a rifle larger than a .22 rimfire (muzzleloading rifles excepted) in areas where rifles are banned for taking deer.[/ul]
He's in a rifle county I presume being up north, so he can carry it there, but down here any non-rifle county (including the incorrectly mentioned Stueben County advice, still shotgun only for now)....he'd be wrote up FAST. Regional Directors of 8 and 9 have verbally commented that this is quickly becoming a source of revenue for them as the new boundaries created by the rifle bill last year put some state lands half-in and half-out. Get on the wrong side, and you get a ticket, no questions asked.

Sorry for passing on misinformation...The conversation I had with the fish cop on this subject took place a few years ago andI don't remember it being specific to rimfire chamberings, but Phades' information is very convincing, and makes sense...

Perhaps the rifle bill will pass the assembly this year and it will become a moot point in Steuben County..

Yeah, I believe it will pass this season late in the year, like the initial bill did last year. Hell, I wish my county was on it.
