my brother hunts in northern pa- last week he rattled in 6 bucks, however, he says they were not responding to any grunt calls. furthermore, he says the younger bucks are running around chasing does like its peak rut. appears to be an earlier rut this year.
I rattled a nice 8 point in to about 40 yards on Saturday. Had he come in about 10 more yards he would be in my freezer. Had 2 other spikes pass by shortly thereafter.
Rattling works best in pre-rut, now is the time to rattle. Once the rut starts forget about rattling till after it is ovewr. They won't pay much attention to it. But right now they are establishing dominance before the breeding season starts in full force. They are definitely in pre-rut at this point in time. I wouldn't say it is the rut yet. Perfect time to rattle. I had no succcess with grunts yet this year.
