Good luck to everyone heading out this weekend, hopefully the weather will hold out. Keep your flints and powder dry. Is a great time of year to be out. Lets hear the reports too.

I've got 2 doe tags to fill in the next week....at least one with the muzzy -- I hope! I'm pretty confident. Otherwise I'll fill them in the remainder of archery season and/or rifle season. This will be my first season hunting with a flintlock....I really want to take a nice doe. The feeling will be exceptional as I built that 50 cal myself....we'll see how it goes. Good luck to everyone this weekend and the rest of the season.

Saw 9 or 10 Sat. afternoon. Missed one at 15 yards...the broken branch on the laurel tells the story. Jumped 6 or 7 after that. 1 doe with two youngin's...I missed the doe. The others were unidentifiable through the brush, but I'm sure most were doe and young ones.

Let's see what tonight brings.

I didn't muzzleloader hunt but I still went out with my bow...and several of my buddies take out the ol' flintlock. I have a good story to tell but it is rather long. To make it short...a buddy and I were sitting in a pop up ground blind at the edge of field. At 5:30 pm a doe steps into the field at 49 yards (rangefinder). My buddy proceeds to shoot...perfect broadside shot....and misses.

The doe just stands there and continues feeding.

My buddy reloads...takes his time and fires again....and misses...

..the doe figures something is up and can't understand why there is smoke billowing out of that funny looking bush so, she proceeds back towards the field edge...but stops just short of it to look around which....

...gives my buddy enough time to reload and take a third shot....

...after the smoke cleared we went to look as the doe was no longer in the field. No blood...

...3 clean misses at 50 yards....

...needless to say, he did not live that one down....

I got onw last night. A small doe fed into my position around 5:45. Pffffffttt...BBBOOOOOMMMM!! 30 yards later she was on the ground. I feel kind of bad because it was a rather small deer, but she'll be good eating. I'm hooked on this blackpowder stuff now! This was my first deer with my new flinter that I built myself. I wish she was bigger, but I'll take what the Lord offers. It was a long drag out though....about a mile and I didn't remember to put my rope in my pocket. Live and learn!

I also missed a doe at 3:30 and saw a spotted fawn shortly after. I don't think that fawn will last the winter. It was small and looked very weak. It didn't have a winter coat....unfortunately, I think it'll be coyote dinner. I saw 4 or 5 tails just before I got to my stand....just 50 yards or so from my stand.
