Default Question for NY'ers....

When buying your NY big game hunting license for either bow, gun, or Muzzleloader, do you feel that we should be able to take a buck and a doe per license? Meaning, you can "legally" take a buck and a doe on your Archery license and a buck and a doe on your regular license or Muzzleloader license. This whole doe permit thing as it is now, is becomming a joke. I realize that we can harvest a doe with our archery licenses now, and then buy another license to use during the gun season. I'm not talking about that.
I say we should be able to harvest a buck and a doe per archery license, and as well with gun. Just do away with the dam doe permits altogether!!
Not everyone is going to fill their tags, or might want to. Just a thought.

As bad as the deer numbers are I think that no matter how many differant tags we buy ,archery , regular season , muzzleloader we should be allowed ONE DEER buck or doe that's it

The way the system is now is fine with me. But they do need to cut back on the number they issue. I can't believe I am saying this but they should stop for a couple years letting people signing over doe tags to other people. Just so the population can grow back.

maytom,

you don't need to get a new license when you get a deer with the bow. You get a either sex tag with a bow lisence. You get a buck tag with a gun lisence. and you get an antlerless tag if you get a muzzle loader lisence (along with a bow tag). So I think there are plenty of deer to be taken with all of the tags (an doe permits - if lucky enough to get one or 2).

If everyone could take a buck & doe on their regular buck liscense - Too many does would be taken, and the population would suffer.

If we were to reduce the hunter population - then maybe.

i agree with john. if you want the herd/buck pop. to get better you have to start to conserve. 2 deer max for a whole season. then next year maybe increase it by one. then maybe rotate between the two until your happy. hell i don't thinkit would take that long to get the pop. back up anyways to be honest.bottom line is i don't see why we need to have a half dozen tags. if moneys tight and you use the meat to feed the family thats different. but i make around 30 g's a year and two deer in the freezer is plenty for this man.

i think your idea is to broad. you cant generalize the whole state into a "two deer with bow, and two deer with rifle" category. With the declining populations, i think its best to handle them by WMU like they are now. I dont see a problem with the system now, but they need to back off on the doe permits. I say that now, but when i dont get one come next fall ill probably be on here complaining

Like other post's have discussed,it is incredibly hard for the DEC to micro manage to the degree that is necessary. You can have vastly different populations of deer within the same management unit. The best example of this is low land suburban area's versus high peaks in the same management unit.Plenty of deer low,no deer high.In my home area there are so many sanctuaries for deer that can't be hunted it makes me sick. The smart old bucks stick in there like glue.
It is all about habitat.(If we build it they will come)For the most part the public land habitat sucks,at least in the catskills. You can't log it,you can't burn it off.On private land you can do almost any thing you want.
Challenginng circumstances for public land herd management!!

I would love to see a one buck per year rule. I would also like to see the DEC crack down harder on people that take more than their permits allow. I have heard of several people that are bragging about the # of bucks that they have shot. And I can say this not any of those bucks have been quality bucks. all that I have heard of with antler and body size I would have to guess were all 1 1/2 year olds. If we want to increase our buck population than the DEC and all hunters must protect our deer from excessive harvest. I for one have put a call in to the DEC but didn't see any results.
