.270 is great rifle for deer. I've had two friends use it on elk on an elk farm and it worked good, but they had easy shots. I'd be leery of using it on elk in the wild at long ranges, but I've never been elk hunting either.

I've used it for deer for the last 3 years and it does a good job. Longest run ins 80 yards before dropping and shortest is 10 yards

Well this ought to start a big debate, but I think the 270 is the best all around rifle you can buy. I call it a poor man's magnum - look at the ballistics - they are outstanding.

The caliber is capable of taking most American game. I used this caliber for years hunting Elk. I shoot a 130 grain bullet for everything, the ballistic are great. When hunting elk I use Nosler Partition and it is really an outstanding bullet. For deer I do switch back to Sierra 130 grain boat-tails.

Nosler is now making a bullet called a "140 grain ballistic tip" which would also be an excellent bullet.

If you get it - I think you will enjoy it....

Not sure of the reality of the price - but it really sounds like a fair price - The Savage 110 is a good rifle - have not heard of the scope...

Are you going to load shells or buy them retail? If you are buying them buy a box of real cheapos in the weight you want for target practice and get some really good ones for hunting - It hurt me but I just bought some 308's for my old Savage 99e (lever action) could not believe the price - almost $30 bucks for a good hunting load - should have reloaded some my self - It's not I don't have the materials...

Good luck with your new gun - clean the gun up really well - especially the bore...

how old is the gun? I personally wouldn't have paid that much for the deal, but it's not too terrible. $200 was a much better number. As far as the gun goes, you can't go wrong, a proven caliber in a proven model.

I have a Remington 700 in .270 and have killed a pile of deer with it. It's a great caliber, and arguably one of the best for whitetails. I typically shot 130 grain ballistic tip loads out of it, but for the last 2 years I have used the Federal Vital Shok's w/ Nosler Accubond's in 140 grain. They all kill deer. I will probably be trying Hornady SST's for next year and trying to load some of my own.
