I checked out the alfalfa field by my house tonight with the spotlight and was pleasantly surprised to see all the nice bucks that I've been watchingthis summer out feeding together. I haven't seen them together like thissince early July. It looks like there were a couple of new bucks out there too...including a big half-racked buck that wouldhave been a beautiful 8-pt. if his rack was fully intact. I can't imagine how he managed tobreak an entire antler off already. In all, there werebetween 6 and 8 nice2-3 yr. old bucksin thegroup without a trace of velvet to be seen on any of 'em. I was too busy checking out all the headgear beforetheymoved off into the brush thatInever counted them or even picked up the video camera which was sitting on my lap.I've burned up quite a bit of gas looking fordeer this summer and ended up seeing the nicest group of bucks a 1/4 mile down the road from the house in my own hunting territory

. I think that I'm gonna take a walk around the field tomorrow and see if I can find any rubs or scrapes on the field edge. The best case scenario would be that all of theseguys willmake it through season unscathed, I'll find their sheds, and theywill allstill be around and bebigger next year. They won'thave to worry about escaping any southern zone rifle bulletsthis November (legal ones anyways)...just hundreds of shotgun blasts like usual. Anyways, this scenario is completely unlikely to happen, so the next best would be having the big, wide7-pt. standing 15-yds. from my stand on opening night with my toppin behind his shoulder. Man,I can't wait...come on October!!!!
