WMU 2G SELLS OUT OF ANTLERLESS DEER LICENSES GAME COMMISSION POSTS DMAP INFORMATION ON WEBSITE WMU 2G SELLS OUT OF ANTLERLESS DEER LICENSES
HARRISBURG - Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) 2G covering a large portion of northcentral Pennsylvania has exhausted its antlerless deer license allocations as of today, Aug. 4, announced Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Vern Ross.
However, Ross added, that does not mean that hunters are out of options when looking to hunt on public lands in this WMU thanks to a large number of Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) coupons that remain available for antlerless deer hunting opportunities on several of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' (DCNR) state forests. "While DMAP permits may be used only on the specific property for which they are issued, they do offer hunters additional antlerless deer hunting opportunities on large tracts of public lands in WMUs that already have exhausted their regular antlerless deer license allocations," Ross said. "DMAP was developed to provide a way for hunters to help landowners achieve the type of deer harvest they require to better manage their lands. We encourage hunters to contact these landowners and take advantage of this unprecedented opportunity."
Landowners can't charge or accept any contribution from a hunter for a DMAP coupon. While hunters may obtain up to two DMAP permits per property, DMAP permits do not impact a hunter's eligibility to apply for and receive antlerless deer licenses issued for WMUs. DMAP permit allotments are not part of the annual general antlerless deer license allocations for WMUs.
Resident hunters must mail DMAP coupons in a regular envelope, along with a check for $6 made payable to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, to the address listed on the coupon to receive their DMAP antlerless deer permit. Nonresidents must include a check for $26. The permit can be used to harvest one antlerless deer on the specific DMAP property. Maps for the properties are to be provided to hunters by the landowners.
Hunters may not use DMAP permits to harvest an antlered deer.
Of the 879,000 antlerless licenses originally allocated, 601,407 licenses remain. Following is a listing of the antlerless deer licenses remaining by Wildlife Management Unit as of 1:29 p.m. today, Aug. 4 (along with the initial allocation for each WMU): WMU 1A, 29,717 (40,000); WMU 1B, 12,488 (27,000); WMU 2A, 48,188 (55,000); WMU 2B, 64,200 (68,000); WMU 2C, 41,778 (53,000); WMU 2D; 40,288 (56,000); WMU 2E, 11,550 (21,000); WMU 2F, 6,137 (30,000); WMU 2G, CLOSED (29,000); WMU 3A, 16,846 (27,000); WMU 3B, 22,676 (41,000); WMU 3C, 16,674 (32,000); WMU 3D, 23,192 (38,000); WMU 4A, 20,881 (35,000); WMU 4B, 20,152 (35,000); WMU 4C, 25,157 (39,000); WMU 4D, 22,524 (40,000); WMU 4E, 25,068 (38,000); WMU 5A, 21,894 (28,000); WMU 5B, 44,999 (56,000); WMU 5C, 67,098 (71,000); and WMU 5D, 19,900 (20,000).
If my math is right, there are still almost 70% of the doe tags left unsold. Out of 879,000, they only sold 277,593. Those sound like low numbers to me. Am I missing something?
Yes, you are. The numbers go up each day as they process the applications and send them on to the county treasurers. Keep watching the website and watch the numbers go up and the unsold license numbers go down. I think what amazes me the most is that 2G is sold out. From what I can discern from other message boards, there are no deer alive in 2G. Why would hunters buy tags when there are no deer?
On the other hand, perhaps some are not applying for the antlerless deer permits. If that is the case, those of us who are will take up the slack in the second round.
