The deer obviously did that to the forest floor. Yep, no other explanation. I'm convinced! The bare dirt floor looks healthy to me! The eco-wizards only want to cut tiny little plots, instead of clearcutting vast areas. Then when the starving deer eat the small amount of new growth, they say "See, it's the deer killing the forest" Nobody seems to remember that at the turn of the century, the whole state was clearcut. That is why we had the "good 'ol days" up north. What is it like now? Old growth once again. We have to have large scale timbering in this state to bring it back around again. As long as there is a bare dirt floor, of course the deer will eat the little amount of new growth. Did the clearcutting at the turn of the century destroy the ecosystem? Not by a long shot. In fact, the whole ecosysytem got a shot in the arm on that one.

Here is the link to another page from that website that discussess the succcess of the deer management program in 1983 and the success of 75% of the clearcuts in the study. If anyone can copy and paste the PDF file they should post this article from the PGN.

I thought it said 70% not 75%. Where did the 75% come from?

Well you thought wrong. It said 30 of the 42 clearcuts had 70% regeneration. Actually only 4 of the 42 clearcuts studied were considered to be a failure ,so that would be a 90% succcess rate .rather than the 75% I posted. Thanks for pointing out my error.

This is typical of the average AR/HR opponent. Stuck somewhere in yesteryear. Some are in the sixties or seventies, some in the fifties and some in the eighties. There are a lot of things from 1983 I'd love to see again. Gas was under a buck, Ronnie Reagan was President I was in my twenties...... but none of that matters now!! Just like a 1983 Game news article has no real relevance in todays deer management. The real life current photos from Cook Forest, on the other hand, are very enlightening and very pertinent totodays deer management.

Alt was the one that made the claim that there was no regeneation north of I-80 in the last 50 years. This article proves Alt was lying, just as he lied about ,late breeding and he benefits of AR's.

Until the foresters start cutting alot more, we just can't have the numbers that some want. Yes, the deer ARE eating the new growth, because new growth is so scarce to begin with. Deer aren't killing the forest, foresters and Eco-wizards are.
