Default Wisconsin Deer Hunting

I live in Illinois, but am looking to purchase land in northern wisconsin..it's tough to find good hunting land in illinois. There are some great deals in this part of wisconsin, but I don't know anything about the deer hunting. I've looked at some parcels around the Mercer area. My realtor surprisingly told me that hunting has been slow the last few years. I'm used to hunting around crop fields....there are no crop fileds in this part of the state. Both parcels have streams and open areas where I would plant small food plots.

In general, what is the deer population like in northern WI..thanks

One place to start is with the DNR Deer Hunting regulations. Look at the different zones as that will help a bit.

The Herd control units have more deer than the others or so the DNR says.

Here is a link to some Wisc info

I think you are going to far North, actually way to far North. The deer population is not real abundant. Land prices have fallen off a bit throughout the state. I don't know how much acreage you are looking for but I know someone who just picked up 97 acres in Vernon County, about 25 minutes from LaCrosse, for $2300 an acre. Awesome cabin and outbuildings came with; logging roads , big bucks and lots of deer period, turkeys, etc are all over. There are other properties in the general area listed for around $3000 an acre which are not selling. Good luck on your venture.

As far as the deer numbers, they can vary greatly in a ten mile distance. Where in N. WI are you wanting to go? The hunting varies greatly from county to county.
