Question Midwest Bucks ???

What causes older midwest bucks to lose inches but gain mass. When i shed hunt the area I hunt, I have sheds from a deer for the last 2 years and it looks like he peaked out 2 years ago. This year i found one of his sheds and it lost inches but gained mass. Then i found the right side to a ten that has about 5 inch tines but they are thicker than any other i have found here.
