Default Morels

I know it is still early, but I am starting to fantasize about a big plate of fried morels. Given all the snow and rain we have had this winter the conditions should be great if we get an early warm spring.

I didn't find many last year, but one day two years ago I picked a whole gunnysack bag full of them. Finally used them up a couple weeks ago!

Hey Lanse,
I enjoy mushroom hunting too, can't hardly wait. Canning is a good way to preserve mushrooms.
Here is the recipe...Use only pint or half-pint jars. After sterilizing the jars, add 1 teaspoon canning salt to each.
Fill with morels, stems down. Stack full and tight in the center. Add room temperature distilled water, filling about 3/4 full. Place in pressure cooker for 30 minutes at 10 pounds pressure.

I have kept them for 1 year this way, no problems. You can also dry them.

I will post some pictures later

Here's a few pictures.....Just a couple more weeks...and it will be picking time !!!!!

I always use mesh bags, helps to spread spores while you walk through the woods.

And here is some I canned last spring...last jar....that water makes some good gravy

I froze them. They seemed to keep pretty well.
