I heard on the radio this morning registrations were down 25% for the WI opener!! That seems awful significant, and the dnr says there are 1.8 million deer? Seems like something doesnt add up.

yea wisconsins dnr needs to wake up they are close to killing off the deer hurd realy scary what is happening to hunting in wisconsin we need to get back closer to the ways of our grandfathers not the ways of now days

In Lake Tomahawk, which is in Oneida Cty, numbers were down 50 percent. At Kurt's Island Sports in Minocqua, there were 2 DNR people there, and I asked them how much it was down from last year. They replied- "Its down as we expected, we just don't know the percents" Lying SOBs. The wolves up there are taking a huge hit, and the DNR won't listen to what hunters say about them. They just blame it on last year's winter.

From what my in-laws say from their land in west-central Wisconsin....poachers and Asians (hmong <sp?> are the deer's worst enemy.
When you have guys shining deer from their trucks...shooting any nice deer with antlers............or folks who shoot anything that moves for the meat....it's going to decimate the herds.
Look past the DNR and blame the auto insurance industry!
I know what you're saying, but the fact remains that the DNR sets the season structure and the rules, not insurers.
Either way, it is clear that something was up this year. The harvest was down all across the state, and though weather is always an issue, it seems hard to believe that the harvest was down this much everywhere. Maybe...just maybe!...the DNR can't count deer as well as they think (sarcasm intended!).

You know what we should have is let the land owners and farmers be in on the deer counting if possible! The count can vary from area to area as well as farm to farm. I think then the count would be more accurate than the guesstimating that is being done now. It probably wont happen but it is a suggestion.

I agree that the winter is a large factorhowever we have taken too many does in many areas!
I don't blame the hunters as some do. Most were just doing what they needed to do to get a buck tag. Some did slaughter the deer such as the two families I posted about earlier. The two families shot 54 deer near Agusta WI. There was a picture in the paper, it made me sick. The majority were baldies.
I just hope we can all come together on this issue before it is too late!
