Anyone know if it's legal to hunt for deer sheds in the forest preserves? My gut feeling says it's probalbly not legal to remove anything from the preserves; anyone know?
didn't some kid get in some trouble a while back for taking leaves from a forest preserve for a school project.

definately illegal....but boy do i see some monster sheds in there, i mean if i were the type of person who would do that sort of thing................ha ha.........got 11 so far this year.............not posting pics to much competition.......
I worked for the forest preserve and know for a fact, i.e. "with my own eyes", that many of the workers and rangers collect sheds regularly. Chances are if you get caught, at least in the suburban preserves, they will just ask you to put them back. Besides, the rangers are the biggest rule breakers.
I shed hunt the forest preserves all the time. You wouldnt believe some of the cool stuff you can find there. My 10 year old son and I go together and have been stopped twice by rangers just to congratulate my son on his finds. They never once told me that it was illegal.Maybe the key is having a kid with you and explain to them you are teaching them about the outdoors and the antlers are just a treasure the kid found.

In IL you can keep road kill deer/ antlers, I know in NM a road kill is property of the state, not sure that info helps. But I'd lean towards it being legal, certainly not a big deal, put it under your shirt....haha.
Its been my experience that places that dont allow artifacts to be removed from there areas post signs in places where they are hard to miss.Usually parking areas, trail heads and other obvious places.
