Default When do you start shed hunting?

I started shed hunting about four years ago. First couple of years I did not do very good. I have been doing a lot better the last couple of years. I was just wondering when other people started looking for them and what type of areas you might concentrate on. I usually look between bedding and feeding areas.

I'll probably start shed antler hunting in a month or so. Last year I didn't start until March. I knew I was the only one to shed hunt my spots, so I might as well wait until, i'm sure they are all down instead of just most. And I usually take the time and check every piece of the property, because I've found them in places I never would,ve guessed if I was in a hurry.

I understand that while shed hunting the best places are by bedding areas, trails to and from feeding areas and around water sources but.....Can you guys give me some tips on what I should be looking for?? I have gone shed hunting a bunch of times and have come up with nothing. Any help would be great. Thanks

I will spend all day out shed hunting. I usually work deer trails. Last year was my best year, I found about 13 singles, and one set. But, that is nothging compared to another guy I know. He goes out and will find 100 in a year. I just can't talk him into telling me his secret. You have to have a good eye and a set of binoculars. Using binos will save you a lot of walking. I have found some while driving by and glassing a wheat field. I have heard you can take a couple of hog panels and put them together on one end at about 35 degrees apart. Load the middle up with corn and when the bucks try to get to the corn, it will knock off any antlers that are about to come off. Never tried it, but it sounds like it will work. Now that there is cwd in boarding states I am afraid to bait deer anymore.

I saw 7 bucks together at a distance of 45 yards on saturday, and all were still wearing both sides of their head gear. I will check again on thursday.
The earlist I have found sheds here is Jan 22nd.

I have already started. I had a few customers come in with Sheds that they had found so I went ahead and went out. I found 1 but not to much luck it seems a little early but hey it is still fun wondering around the timber. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

I have found a few sheds accidently while hunting but what really kicked it off was 4 years ago when my son was 6. I found a small shed, left it lay and decided to go home to get my son after work to show him. He was impressed to say the least and with a little looking he found the other side about 40 yards from the first shed. From that point shedhunting too a life of it's own for us. We found a few more that year before green up. 4 years later with many, many miles tromped, we have found 180 sheds.

We usually don't get too serious about tromping till the middle of Febuary and will look till green up in May. We generally find most of the sheds in feeding areas or trails leading to the feeding areas. Very few are found in the bedding area.

Binocs are a must!! In tall grass or in tree areas, it pays to look back from where you come every once in a while. Sheds can blend in real well and you would be surprised how many you walk by. Pay attention to light being reflected off an object on sunny days. Try to keep the sun behind you when you look. Do not expect to see the whole shed but learn to pick out a tine or part of a main beam sticking out of the snow, leaves or grass. Mostly have fun and enjoy what nature has to offer you since somedays that will be the only thing you find. There is a few more things I could tell you but this is the basics and what has worked for us. Goodluck.

Tim
