My farm/hunting property borders on the Shawnee State Forest. One of the rangers lives about a mile down the road and we talk about the wildlife every time we get together. He told me last year that the official count for black bear in Shawnee was up to 12 but the unofficial count is more like 30. My neighbor says they saw a bear near my barn but I have not seen any tracks that close. Two years ago during spring turkey season I saw something on my land that looked like it could have been a black bear about 150 to 200 yards away across a deep creek hollow.
I sure hope they're increasing in numbers. They're just cool animals.

there are definantly bears in Oh. last year on the first day on gun season a lady in Muskingum county I believe shot a smaller size blackie. I grew up in Jefferson county, and I remember several reports of bears over the years. during the holiday I was staying with the folks who still live there and the bear sightings were even on the news.
