Default SB 17 good for landowners and hunters

Illinois's house of representatives will act on SB 17 this week. This bill attempts to deal with wooded land assessment increases imposed by the Ill. Dept. of Revenue a few years ago. If SB 17 passes, any timberland or unimproved land of 5 acres or more will be assessed the same as 2006 thereby keeping the property tax lower on that unimproved property as long as the landowner has a plan in a special program registered with the Illinois DNR. If no plan is currently in place, landowners could register for a plan to be approved with the DNR. What this will do is keep unimproved property taxes lower and save timberland from being destroyed.

Landowners and sportsmen should contact their reps. to let them know they support SB 17.

How much of a proposed increase has been discussed.
