Default Frog Season in Ohio

It starts here tomorrow. Am I the only one fired up about it?

Yup. Frogs don't taste nothing like chicken. I like to catch'm, but I wouldn't eat one of them slimey nasty chewy things unless I was starve'n. Frog season opens July 1st if I remember right.

I use to catch so many that I would put them in a small burlap bag and keep them in the fridg. Had fresh legs at hand any time I liked. The wife hated live frogs in there. It seems the older I get the less time I have to do those kind of things. good luck and leave a few for breeders.

I love gigging frogs. There is just nothing more fun on a summer evening. I wouldn't want to eat frog legs 365 days a year, but they are good to have on occasion. Darn good actually.

I'm looking for things to do this summer - anybody got advice on how a beginner learns how to gig? Thanks!

Frog legs are awesome. I never actually get enough to get my fill. usually 4 or 5 nice bullfrogs and a few smaller bulls and leapords.

Between me and my son, that's not enough for a good meal.

I usually use a .22 with CCI birdshot. You have to be on top of them to kill them or you'll just wound them and they jump and dive under the pond scum.

It's hard trying tosneak those last couple feet closer to insure a kill.LOL

That's why they make 15 foot gigs .

Move slower , and when you think you're slow enough slow down some more . Wait for the frog to relax , when he starts croaking again start moving , stop if he stops croaking and wait for him to start up again . Herons do this , and you'll never be as good at froggin' as they are . I've found that Spring Peepers make excellent practice before the season starts . They're very easy to spook , very small , and you can even call to them to get them to reveal their location . If you can sneak up on and gig or shoot a frog the size of a penny those huge bullfrogs aren't nearly as hard .
