Collars are useful but you have to understand that collars aren't for training a dog. They are use to reinforce commands the dog already knows but chooses to disobey. I suggest some yard work on a long check cord with him first. Get him coming to you. Get him going with you. Take him into a big area and put him on the cord. Walk with him and when he gets to the end of the cord call his name and quickly switch diretions. This will teach him to go with you. At 4 months old he isn't really ready for anything too demanding. I would look up a local NAVHDA chapter in your neck of the woods and get in with them. They are really good at helping new guys like you with versatile breeds like a shorthair. One thing to remember is that german dogs are hard heads and it takes a good deal of patience to get them right like you want them.
