Default got a ?

i posted this in the traditional archery forum before and didn't get too much info. so i will ask it here since i know a lot of you hunt with recurves and longbows. i want to get one to hunt with. what are the specifications i should be looking for. i will be stalking most of the time so how many pounds should i shoot. and also what brands do you guys prefer or recommend that i should get. what type of heads and arrows should i use.i know a cut-on-contact blade is a must, but what brand would work best? thanks in advance.

William,

I shoot a Mathews Heritage longbow that is 50#@28"; however, it pulls closer to 55# - I had the Freddy Bear pro shop confirm this.I know the minimumdraw weightfor deer hunting is 40#. I shoot 125 gr. Magnus stinger 2-blade broadheads. I like them because they are very sturdy. I have a set that is dedicated for practicing. This bow is light weight and shoots very smooth with very little stacking. I also shoot with a tab, three fingers under.
Thisis a great bow for stalking - lightweight and youwill have plenty of room to maneuver. I shootCarbon Tech Whitetail Hunter arrows with 5" feathers offset 1 degree.Any arrows other than carbon, I spend too much time worrying about straightness.

CAUTION: It is a challenge to shootfrom a climbing tree stand. Thebow is66" long and I have to cant it at a very acute angle (top limb at ~2 o'clock) so thebottom limb clears thetop bar of the tree stand.

Brand new this bow runs $799MSRP. I bought mine last year (used) on eBay for $375 (including S&H). It is a blast learning how to shoot it;it takes about a year to learn how to shoot itadequately. On thetraditional archery site, Black Widow longbows are all the rage and they are very expensive and take 2-3 months for delivery.

Good Luck,
Judd

Hey William, I've got a Martin Dreamcatcher recurvethat is the cat's meow. Martin makes a good bow for sure, and they don't cost an arm and a leg. Kendall has a couple nice bows, one of which is a Martin Hunter. THAT'S a nice bow.

PSE also makes a decent trad bow. I have a Heritage series Sequoia, thanks to Kendall. That's an awesome longbow. It's a little long for a climber (70"), but I think it'll work well in a hang-on stand, and it's light-weight which is great for stalking. Mine is a 65-pound bow which is a little much, but I like it alot.

You can find some good ones on Ebay, but I myself would rather put my hands on one before I pay for it.

Jason may have some info on trad bows. He's our resident-expert.

thanks fellas. i know a guy who owns a bait shop down here who has 2 recurves one is a ben pearson 50# and the other is a bear 65#. they are both nice, but i dont' know which i should get. i really want to get into traditional hunting but i don't know if i wanna start another hobbie to drain my bank account. i will not hunt with it till at least next year and that is only if i think i can kill a deer with it. so i got some time to think. i just wanted some input from people who know and use these types of equipment. so thanks again

Well, I would definetly recommend the 50-pounder. It'll ease you into trad shooting alot better than the 65#. And Pearsons are great bows too, depending on which model it is.

Or you could just do what I do and get both.

I would love to get both, however i don't have that kind of money. The 50# also has a stabilizer hole to moutn a bowfishing reel on it so that is the one i am going to get.
