Default Mazonia

Anybody ever hunt the Mazonia area in Braidwood? I ran into a guy at Kmart and he said the bowhunting was pretty good there.

I went out there 2 or 3 years ago. I didn't know the area and didn't want to take the time to learn it, so I only went there twice I think. It's a great area to hunt. They just opened part of it not too long ago, so the deer are relatively 'new' to being hunted. And I've heard there are some big bucks in there. Makes sense since the whole area is surrounded by crop-lands.

I'd give it a shot if I were you Judd. You don't live that far from there and it'll be a great place to learn (the area I mean; not that you need to learn to hunt).

Mazonia is where i do most of my bowhunting since i only live a few miles away. The hunting is not too bad but it can get crowded on nice weekends. like when i went out saturday afternoon i was the 5th person signed in and when i left there were 30 people signed in. yesterday i was out and rattled up a big 10 and a smaller 8 so the deer are there, you just have to get away from the rest of the hunters. i park in the eagle lake parking lot and stalk the roads that surround ponderosa, i have taken several small does like this but for the bucks if you are on the ground you have to hunt the ridge tops. if you want any more info just let me know and i can help you out. i hunt out there about 70% of the time that i do hunt. good luck and be safe.

William

Great pointers William.

How do they do access over there?
Lottery? Assigned days? Just sign in and first-come first served?

you just sign in at monster lake and sign out when you are done.first coem first serve basis. if you want to find out more info you can call the Mazonia Office at 815-237-0063. just ask them about deer hunting the south unit and they will tell you everything you need to know. which is just sign in and go hunt, when your done, just sign out.

I'd get out there ASAP!! I was out saturday for about 3 hours at first. I went back to the truck because I didn't dress warm enough (lousy planning) and came back in about 45 minutes and had a scrape right under my tree. I could hear them running around me before first-light.

They're definately chasing right now. This week and next. Once they pair up, it's gonna slow way down.

No, I wasn't there. But they're running everywhere. I see them by my shop, on my way to and from work, all over the place. I saw a spike in the middle of Aurora walking across a field with his nose to the ground, and I saw a nice 10-pointer running behind a doe this morning in Sugar Grove.
