Default Advise on Knives

I'm looking for a hunting and skinning knife for my son.
The knives I use are 25yrs old and are very special to me.
They where bought for me by my dad and I'll use nothing else.
They are Old Timer Schrades. They are a good overall hunting knife.
However I know there is better cutlery steel out there than the ones I have and I was woundering what the best knife for my dollar is?
I have yet to decide on how much I should Budget for one yet I'm guessing $100.00 for each give or take 25.00.
I really have no clue how much one costs anymore.

I use the gerber gators with the cm154 drop point. They are very reasonably priced and really hold an edge.

Gerber Gator or Buck Alpha Hunter have worked really well, easy to hone and keep an edge.

I have quite a few knives but my two favorites are Buck folding hunter and a Buck personal. I worked with knives for 27 years of my life and the reason I like them is that they hold an edge.

I too have the Gerber Gator knife. I like the gut hook feature and the handle material which seems less likely to slip in one's hand when covered with guts. I find the point difficult to puncture skin and flesh, such as when reaming around the anus. I also like a Buck 110 knife, which has a more pointy tip which DOES support reaming better. The 110, however, does not have the gut hook. Just about any knife will do -- either the Gerber Gator or Buck 110 certainly will work.

I have a Gerber Gator, Shrade And a Buck 110. None of them can hold a candle to My Puma Folder. It stays sharper than all the others and takes a better edge. its the only knife I would buy. IMHO
