Default Bushnell Elite 40 mm or 50 mm?

I am going on a hunting trip in Alabama in January and need advice on which size scope to buy for my Browning 270. Should I buy a 3x9x40mm or a 3x9x50mm scope? I need something that will let the most light in while hunting at dusk and dawn. Thanks in advance. ROLL TIDE!!

It is said the human eye can only accept 42mm of light, that means in a 50 mm 8mm's are unharnessed for light transimission. So while you'll gain a little it probably won't be much difference in the 2 same model scopes, you will however get an increase in FOV in regards to tech. data. The other thing to consider is cheek placement on the stock, often larger objective require high mounts to clear the bore & bolt throw. If the higher mounts cause you to lift off the stock it can effect your shooting ability, something to keep in mind. I have 40,44 &50mm scopes mounted on my rifles and can't honestly say under most conditions of legal hunting hours where the larger has given me a clear advantage if comparable glass is used. Differences can be seen in higher quality coatings and glass but that is not in the equation here. In the elite the 50 mm is long, heavy and the baseball bat styling is unappealling to me, as such I would stick with the 40mm objective and mount ontop of leupold rings/bases with enough money saved to buy some bullets for sight in.

Really choice is yours though and good luck in your decision/hunt.

50mm scopes are not necessary and they must be mounted higher which can cause problems obtaining the proper cheek position on the stock.

I bought a elite with a 40 mm obj. last week, so far it seems to be adequate for me.

I personally like a 50mm obj. lens. They are a little larger in size and might weight a little more but that"™s not a concern for me. You should check them out at the store side by side to make your decision. The end result is you should be satisfied with your purchase. Good Luck...

Sketter 7mm gave the sam advice I would give you. Go with the 40mm. I went with a 50mm Leupold VXIII 2.5 X 10 and didn't notice and advantage over my Leupold 3 X 9 X 40. The disadvantage of the 50mm is you usually will need to add a comb raising kit to the rifle because of the large objective.

I am a law enforcement sniper and we use the Leupold 40mm scopes.

If I had to do it again I would by a Leupold 3X9X40. The new ones have mulitcoat lenses, 1/4 minute adjustment and have a lifetime warranty. You can get a good deal on used ones on Ebay and with the liftime warranty you can send it in if you get a bad one and don't have to worry about getting screwed. I have heard good things about the bushnell elite's, however, every other bushnell scope I've used I have returned. (Bushnell has awesome customer service, I've had to deal with them several times with a red dot last year).
