Nikon makes compact binoculars called Travel-Lites. Very good clarity. I have some 12x25mm and they cost about $150. The only drawback is they don't gather much light so right at dawn or right at dusk you might as well not even pick them up. After that tho, they are very good binoculars. You might want to check them out.

My advice is to eat canned beans for a month and take all your pop cans in. Then buy the best optics you can aford.

I don't mean to sound flippant, but that's almost an oxymoron.

I fully agree with Robow. Buy the best you can afford. Really what good are binoculars that wont do the job in low light when you need them most. gg.

speyrjb had good advice. The Nikon Travelites are very good for their size and cost. However, mini-binos limit your viewing at dusk and dawn because they don't allow enough light to enter. Get something with a large objective lense so you can tell the difference between a bunch of sticks and a buck. Nikon makes good optics and so does Pentax. The Pentax DCF series has had excellent reviews. Take a look at Swift also. They are not well know but have some excellent optics at grat prices. Spend some time looking through many binos and take them outside in real light. Make sure they are comfortable to hold and carry. And spend the extra $, you will never be disappointed with good quality optics.

Check out www.betterviewdesired.com. It's a bird watchers sight but they seem to really know good glass.

In the $200 range I can buy just about the best that Nikon offers.. I don't consider that cheep, I meant I did not want to buy Zeiss $$$. And I don't need to eat beans to afford them. As it says in my first post I already have a set of 40's for low light .. I am leaning to the steiner glass ...

I bought a pair of Alpen from wal-mart last week for $20. 8x40, shoot that's all I need. It may be a different story if I were hunting long range.

you can't go wrong with Bushnell sportviews. I have had several pair - started with 8x, then 12x, now I have 16x32 (i think). They work just fine for our type of woods. Maybe not what you may want for the big west, but for $12-$30, you can't beat them.
