This is a short review for the Hunter Holster model 1165. This is a new holster from Hunter and I am using it for a Ruger SP101, hammerless, 2 1/4" barrel.
A short time ago I bought a hammerless Ruger SP101 to use as a CCW gun. But I also wanted an open carry holster for this gun. Like many people, I replaced the stock grips with a Hogue grip. I will also replace the factory front iron sight with a tritium sight. So any open carry holster had to be able to accomodate these modifications.
FOBUS makes a holster for the Ruger SP, but the idea of the hard plastic wearing against my pistol, even in stainless steel, did not thrill me.
Uncle Mikes makes a holster that fits this gun, grip and future sight, they call it "Li'll Sidekick." I used this for a while but the holster never remained upright and the grip did not remain snug against my body. A very aggravating situation.
Then I came across the Hunter.
This holster is actually made for a Taurus Public Defender, but it fits the Ruger very nicely.
The belt loop fits a 2" belt and holds the gun both upright and snugly against your body. Often I will open carry when going for my daily walks. A holster that did not flop around when walking was very important. This holster stays in place even when walking.
My preferred retention is the thumb break. But finding a holster with a thumb break for a hammerless revolver is not easy. One benefit of this holser being slightly larger than the gun is that the friction adjustment screw wraps perfectly behind the trigger guard. Not quite a thumb break, but I feel the gun sits securely in the holser and I am still able to draw it very quickly and easily.
I have only had this holster for a few days, but in that time it has thoroughly impressed me. It is not cheap, about $70-$80. But I still feel comfortable recommending it if you need an OWB holster for your Ruger SP that has Hogue grips.
Note: I have not tried this holster with the stock rubber grips from Ruger.
