I have always been partial to the Motorola's. I would just try to pick up one on Ebay. Sure you get find them at a great deal.

The Motorola Talkbout is a good radio, limited on range but work good. I've had the same Talkbout 250 for 10 years and works great. This year I thought I'd try some Midland GTX950 GMRS/FRS, I found them for $69.00 a pair. I'm hoping I'll get some more range out of them. But I can still use the FRS lower watt channels to talk to most in our group that have the older Talkbouts. These new ones have more features than I need but the Weather channels might come in handy at times.

i would recomend against the midland radios ...i bought a set a year ago and they didnt work over a 1/4 mile (25 mile radios) in the woods wich makes them useless to me so i took em back and the second set was a little better still not as good as my motorola 5 mile radios

I have the Midland 25 mile radios and have decent luck with them. True enough they don't get any where near the 25 mile range but here in mountainous Vt they work well enough for us to talk if we are within 3 miles or so.

I have a set of the old Motorola Talkabout 250 that have a 3 mile range rating. I also have a newer set of Midlands with the 18 mile rating.

The Motorolas beat the Midlands hands down for clarity and range. The Midlands have static at about 1000 yards with open line of sight. IMHO they are junk. I am buying some more Motorolas.

I tried out my new Midland 5 watt GMRS radios this weekend in the U.P. and found they have longer range than my Talkbout 250's. As long as I use the High watt GMRS channels they work better. If I try to use the lesser FRS low watt channels to work with my Talkbouts they are the same as the Motorola's..
