Default Gut Hook

Does your knife have a gut hook? If so, do you find it valuable? Why? How are you sharpening it? I have been thinking about using the gut hook type utility knife blades, because, I cannot imagine how I would sharpen a gut hook on a resharpenable type knife.

I've got one on an older Buck knife. It works o.k., but it's certainly not essential. Sharpening can be an issue. I wouldn't buy one again though.

Never needed one yet in 27 years...

Thanks Hog,
That's what I do now. I guess this is why I don't understand the new gut hook fashion. I had a Wyoming knife and tossed it after a slip which almost cost m my good thumb! I was just sure somebody had the answer to why this is on all the new knives.

I tried a wyomong knife. Now they have guards, but they are still aqward and I don't think they work that well.

Gut hooks definately work nice but are not essencial.

I have a buck vanguard but find myslef using the blade like in the pic. I find using the blade is easier a cleaner cut and allot easier to keep sharpened.

I agree with Reb. I use a Cabelas super version of the Buck 110 that rarely needs sharpening. I have dressed/ skinned2 elk and 2 deer with it in the past 2 years and helped with a few others and it is still sharp. I really don't need to carry an additional gut hook for that small function which works perfectly well with my knife. The only additional item I carry is a Wyoming saw when I elk hunt.

Well, i've seen gut hook shaped utility knife blades for sale at Home Depot. So, my idea is to put those in my folding utility knife.
