Default RE: Good tent ?

I'm a real big fan of the Eureka Timberline series. I just replaced my 2 man Eureka Special Edition (got it 14 years ago) with a 4-person version. The versions that have the attached vestibule are great because it adds a lot of dry storage space so you don't have to keep everything in the tent with you (or out in the weather). I can set the tent up in less than 10 minutes all by myself easily. I got custom fit heavy duty poly sheets...one for under the tent and one for inside...this keeps the inside clean and protects the bottom of the tent from anything you missed when clearing a spot to put it up. The only reason that I'm replacing it is because after 14 years of use the UV rays have finally gotten the best of the rain fly and it's ripping (brittle from drying out), and I like the design well enough that I got another just like it (except bigger). I got the tent back when I was in Boy Scouts, and there's a reason why it's the most commonly used tent for scouting...it stands up to the test. It's certainly not the lightest out there, but for the durability and design I'm willing to sacrifice a couple pounds.

Default RE: Good tent ?

I second Riverotter. I have a had a Ereka Timber line 2 man A frame for 22 years. It has been in 25 states, htichiked 50,000 miles, hiked, maybe a thousand miles, and with stood a gale with nary a drop.It is not real light (about 6 lbs I think)It cost me 99 bucks and by god that's what they cost now or very close to it.
But there are lighter tents out there if you are backpacking. If you can spend over a couple of hundred dollors, you won't be dissappointed in Kelty, Marmot, and North Face tents. Some of these can exceed 300 bucks

I stick with good brands. Do not I repeat do not skimp on tents and sleeping bags and pads. You'll be sorry
