I've switched from OFA to Pennhip for my hip evaluations. "Turk's" Pennhip Evalutation placed him in the 90th percentile (that's as good as it gets...his hips are perfect). His refererence number is Pennhip #857531. His CERF number is CB-5458/2005-13. I'll have his eyes recertified when the opthamologist comes to Montana this fall. We don't not have an opthamologist in Montana. The closest one is in Colorado. He comes to Montana a couple times a year, so I have to catch him when he's here to do my dogs.
I switched from OFA to Pennhip a couple of years ago for a couple of reasons. Number one, Pennhip is a much more accurate method for evaluating hips. They take 3 x-rays as opposed to the one that OFA requires. The laxity of the hips is then measured based on what shows up in the 3 x-rays and the evaluation is based on those measurements as opposed to the subjective (vets' opinions) evaluation done by OFA. Pennhip evaluations can also be done at a much younger age than OFA, so a breeder knows much sooner if there are any problems. Pennhip can do them as early as 4 months of age, but I usually wait until a dog is at least a year old. The Pennhip procedure is more expensive than OFA, but I feel it is worth the extra cost. Also, any vet can do an OFA x-ray and submit it to OFA. Some are better at placing the hips properly for the OFA x-ray than others. Not all vets can do Pennhip. They have to be trained and certified. There are only 3 in Montana that are certified to do Pennhip x-rays. The x-rays they take are then submitted to Pennip for evalutation.
Hope this answers any questions on the eyes and hips.
Very cool for me. Glad to see you are doing things the right way. I applaud you.
Also, having Chessies with that kind of hip ratings is pretty rare nowadays.
You have some great looking dogs -- and the pups in the pic are great looking as well.
I think that anyone who is looking for a Chessie should get ahold of you for sure.

Thanks Doc.Ya, I take dog breeding very seriously.... Too bad people weren't as careful when couples get married and have kids as dog breeders are when they are planning a litter of pups.
