Why not a Flat Coated Retriever? They are a little easier to find, but still unusual, and every one I ever met back home in England was very trainable and hardworking, but also a great family dog. I got the poor man's version - the Black Lab/Golden mix, but she too is very smart and athletic.

Well, I was looking for a medium sized dog. I want a good retriever that can flush. Good for waterfowl and upland birds. And most importantly, a non-hyper dog. A great family dog too.

Any other suggestions?
