Default Bankhead/Black Warrior WMA Hog Hunt

Three of us are heading down to Bankhead/Black Warrior WMA from Huntsville, AL to try to nab some hogs this Saturday (3/5/11).

We scouted last week and saw tons of sign. I can see why they want to get rid of these things. They are devastating the habitat and reducing the turkey and deer population. Interestingly, though, we only saw one hog, and it was gone before we could react to shoot it. Those things are fast!

All three of us are new to hogs, so we need some tips. Has anyone here regularly hunted Bankhead? Recently? Where are the hogs? Want to go with us? Bankhead is so huge it's difficult to choose where to go to be successful.

If it's "legal" I would take some shelled corn with. Corn the areas you want to hunt, usually near where they have already been rooting.
If pressured it will be right after daybreak & just b/4 Dark when they move. They learn to go nocturnal real fast when pressured.
I would think a call to the WMA office & the peiople working there might give you a heads up on an area to start.
Good Luck.

Thanks ahunter55. I'll have to check the rules for baiting. Just called Bankhead, and they told me the areas with hog sightings in the past two days. We'll start there.

Anyone else?

I'll be heading down there tomorrow and Sunday. I'll be west of Hwy 33 near the WMA HQ.

It's illegal to hunt over bait in AL; plain salt is OK as long as it has no minerals and it's just salt. In the WMA/NF areas, you can't use anything.

It's squirrel season now, so I'll be using a .22 WMR rifle for hogs. Hog hunting is legal in the BW WMA for any hunting season with arms legal for the season.
