Default Roe deer and muntjac deer.

Hi All,
Over here in england the Roe Deer season has kicked off, because of the very mild winters of late the amount of Roe Bucks and Does has exploded in large numbers. So now i have now got to be out and about in the woods before the sparrows wake up,and the evening outing will be until its too dark to shoot. How many of you guy's have been hunting in england and what species of deer did you hunt. Also we have a big problem with Muntjac Deer, mainly because they breed twice a year, the policy now is to shoot on sight any muntjac that you see.The various farms and woodlands that i manage is over run with them, and there is no close season on them.Iam now finding that 60% of my stalking clients want a Muntjac trophy than any of the other species of deer that i manage.I would like to hear from you hunters that have hunted in england, and the experiences you had while over hear good and bad.
Regards,
chinese water deer.

Hi, I have never hunted there, but have always been curious about the opportunities, methods, gun regs, etc.
Can you tell me more?

Default Insight to how we hunt in england.

Hi lets see if i can give you some information how we do things over here in england.
1..There are some really good opportunities hunting over here, as we can hunt all year long, so that gives a greater choice of deer that you can stalk,Fallow Deer,Red Deer,Roe Deer,Sika Deer,Chinese Water Deer have their seasons ,but Muntjac Deer can be shot all year round, because they dont have a close season.
2..Its the same here as it is in the states, the large Stalking Company's are working the same as some of your Outfitters and they can be expensive, but there are others over here and myself that offer good Deer Stalking at a more competitive prices, to suit most pockets.
3..Stalking Deer in england has only one end to it,that is to get a really good representation of any particular deer,or go for a gold medal deer and get a very large trophy. Some stalkers spend a lot of money for medal trophy's,and some go after what i call a good trophy without breaking the bank.
4..I have been a professional Deer Stalker/Manager for about 30+ years and have taught and taken out hundreds of stalkers and i have always treated every client the same, to me it is all about me getting him or her the best trophy that they can afford, and also giving an outing hopefully they will never forget.
5..Prices for Deer Trophy's vary across the board, some i call down right stupid and this in my opinion is where stalking has gone wrong!!there are stalking firms here that are exploiting stalkers with blown up prices, and all they care about is the quickest turn round on clients and shooting everything with a large trophy head just to make huge amounts of money, and when they have shot that area out, then they move on to some other ground and do the same.A few years ago, stalking deer was really trying hard to get the best trophy, alas now anything with a half decent head does not show as a beautiful looking trophy to be admired, but instead it comes up as pound signs. In some cases i dont think that there is much respect for the deer now,i'm not saying that all the stalking is run the same as some of these firms,we still have plenty of stalking co out there that still make you work for your trophy, rather than have it put on your plate for you.
6..I take out a range of clients from english, german, belgiums,i have never taken any americans out,but a friend of mine has had american hunters over and the ones i have met have been a great bunch of guy's,they told me that they love it here,i asked why they said that they loved the pubs and the varied hunting to be had here.
7..The method that i use for stalking deer is about the same as any other stalker uses. This usually consists of 2 four hour sessions, the morning one can be from a high seat or,as we callit still stalking, this is where you go looking for your deer, the evening stalk will usually be up a high seat.
8..When a client asks for a particular deer,i then go out and try to locate it ,so when he or she arrives,i have some idea where to find it.
9..Other methods of stalking can be when you feed up area's around the highseats,so you get the deer coming into feed, and that way you can select the one you want.
10..Rifles used for the larger deer must be 243cal minimum and can go up to 3oo magnum, myself i use a 308 cal,270 cal,303 sporter,30/30 winchester. They changed the law on the smaller deer in england ,this allows us to shoot Muntjac Deer,Chinese Water Deer with a centre fire.22,i use a 22/250 cal.
11..Many years ago i was controlling deer fo the forestry commission and i had to take my deer stalking certificates to show competance.
Now stalkers are taking these dc1 cert and the dc2 cert this is supposed to let the person who's ground you are shooting on that you are a safe shooter, bits of paper do not make a good stalker, hands on in the field is the best way to gain experience, not paying these organisations 350 pounds for five days in a classroom.
We have had all sorts of regulations thrown at us over the last couple of years, made up by faceless idiots that think these stupid schemes up.
12..When i get a client that wants to come stalking, say for instance, germany and he wants to bring his own rifle,i have to sort out a temporary firearms permit which covers him for his stay in england,i always tell the client that it will take a couple of weeks to set up.I also ask them if they would like to use one of my rifles this works better sometimes.Everyone that stalks with me must be able to put 3 shots into a 4 inch circle.
13..I manage Red Deer,Fallow Deer,Roe Deer,Muntjac Deer on and around my area's.Ican also arrange for the clients, both species of Sika Deer,Formosian, and Manchurion and also Chinese Water Deer from a very large english estate.
I hope this has given you some idea what happens over here and how it works, but as you will appreciate every situation is different, and that is what makes memoriable and great DeerStalking.
Regards,
Chinese Water Deer.

Do you have any pics of the different deer and animals you hunt. It would be nice to see them.
